Grateful. Full. Blessed. Thankful.
For many people the holidays are a time of great sadness, loneliness, and worry. How can I make the paycheck stretch to buy gifts for my family? How can I provide a Thanksgiving meal? Will my children notice my stress? How will I make it through these holidays when I’m grieving the loss of my husband, wife, sister, brother, child…
The needs of our neighbors are great. Some of the needs are visible on the surface but some are deeper and hidden underneath smiles and pleasantries.
The needs in our community are great but the POWER of our community is greater.
Margaret Mead is famous for saying, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
As members of the community we should take pride in our town’s belief in the importance of coming together to make positive changes and in our history of being able to positively impact our community. It’s one of the many things that makes Marshalltown special.
This Thanksgiving, will you help us change the world by starting in our own community?
Marshalltown Moms is raising money for the Marshalltown Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving Community dinner which will take place Thanksgiving day from 11 AM-1 PM at the Salvation Army in town.
We are asking for donations of as little as $1 to help support those in need this Thanksgiving. Marshalltown Moms will match the donations (dollar for dollar) up to $200. We hope, of course, to raise even more than that! We’ll be accepting donations up until November 20th.
To donate online please visit: https://www.gofundme.com/marshalltownthanksgivingdinner Or mail a check to Marshalltown Moms 300 E. Linn St. PO Box 1887, Marshalltown, IA. 50158.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed when we are faced with all the needs in our world. This initiative is about our community and our neighbors. Last year Marshalltown rallied to feed over 800 people through the Salvation Army Thanksgiving Dinner.
If you are able and willing to assist Marshalltown Moms in this initiative , any money you donate will go directly to 800 people that are our friends, our neighbors, or even the person standing next to you at the checkout counter.
Your $1 (or more) donation will be used to buy 45 turkeys, 12 hams, pies, and sides to create a Thanksgiving meal for our community.
But really your donation means so much more than what it can buy.
Your $1 (or more) donation will:
- Give approximately 800 people the chance to share a meal with others.
- Feed many people truly in need as it may be their only meal of the day. *Meals on Wheels doesn’t deliver on holidays.
- Give our neighbors who are dreading the holiday something to look forward to.
- Provide comfort to our neighbors who may be lonely or grieving this holiday season.
Again, Marshalltown Moms will match (dollar for dollar) up to $200!

As parents, donating money to this tangible event in the community gives us a chance to talk to our children about building a community by helping out our neighbor. It helps encourage kindness and generosity in our children.
Donating $1 (or more) to the community dinner is a simple but important step in community building. You are saying “I’m here. You are not alone” to fellow community members.
Sometimes giving financially isn’t feasible for everyone. Your time is also equally valuable. Major Beth Stillwell of the Salvation Army relayed they are always in need of volunteers to cook, serve meals, and help with clean-up. If interested in volunteering, please contact Majors Ben or Beth Stilwell at (641) – 753-5236
