Marshalltown’s biggest festival is THIS weekend! We chatted with Alyce, a long time board member, Oktemberfest advocate, and organizer of the family events for Oktemberfest. She shared some great information about what’s planned for this year’s event.
What is Oktemberfest?
Oktemberfest is Central Iowa’s largest family friendly festival. We have been hosting this event for well over 20 years.
We’ve heard from many community members, including Police of Chief Tupper, that Oktemberfest is their favorite Marshalltown event. What do you think makes it so special?
I believe what makes this so special and unique is we include something fun for every person in the family from 0-100. We begin with a large children’s time from 5-7pm Thursday, September 21st. We will have a crowning of the Little Mr. & Ms.
Oktemberfest at 6pm. Any first and second grade students are welcome to participate and put their name/number in a hat. Winner is by drawing – so everyone has a chance.
- Friday we love to have the Car Show and concert. Usually there will be upwards of 75 old and new unique vehicles.
- Saturday starting at 10am is the Grand Parade. It usually lasts 2 hours with so many different floats and bands. Kids and adults love to see the parade. After the parade, we have demonstrations of local groups, usually you can see Taekwondo demonstrations, Hand-to-hand combat demonstrations, National Champion Tumblers, and more bands. Vendors selling products, food, drinks, etc. Beginning at 1pm is the new “Blaze color run”. This is a 5k fun type run.
- Sunday is the motorcycle show and rodeo. It gets quite entertaining as motorcycles go through obstacle courses, or just seeing the “strength” competition between the audience members. Definitely come up to view up close any type of motorcycle and see what a good rider can accomplish while a passenger completes different activities.
What do you think will especially appeal to moms and families?
I think the mom’s will most be interested in the newest item this year – The Blank Children’s Hospital Fire Bus will be here Saturday afternoon form 12-4. This semi trailer is a fully enclosed fire safety house. It is handicapped-accessible education tool that offers hands-on learning to prepare children for the unexpected and frightening experience of a fire. Demonstrations are conducted by our local firefighters and volunteers who teach children life-saving procedures. Our local Elks Lodge is sponsoring this great event.
Anything else you’d like the community to know?
We also use over 250 volunteers over the weekend. If anyone would like to volunteer, please contact us through our website www.oktemberfest.com
