We are Marshalltown Moms. But on a LARGER scale, we are IOWA Moms! Iowa Moms: we do it best! There are so many fantastic aspects for child-rearing here and participating in Iowan culture. But one of the greatest parts of raising an Iowa family is… you guessed it! The IOWA STATE FAIR!
Ladies and Gentlemen, the State Fair is one of my favorite times of year. I will be experiencing my 26th annual fair visit in 2017. We typically go anywhere from 2-5 times. Therefore, I have visited the fair approximately 65 times in the past!!
My fellow-fair-friends, here’s an exclusive look at how you can enjoy the fair with your family this year. (This information is mostly opinion based on Little Audrey’s past fair experiences and information gathered from other Moms, like you!)
In 2017 the fair will run from August 10th-August 20th and is open from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. Buildings are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the Thrill Zone (Midway!) opens at 10 a.m. daily. A friendly reminder: though there are many smoke-free areas, the Iowa State Fair is NOT smoke-free. Keep this in mind for you and your family if you have any concerns!
Before you go, visit HyVee, HyVee Drug, or Fareway to pick up your advanced, discounted tickets! Fair tickets can be used any day the fair is operating, and can be shared with friends and family if you can’t make it! There are more options for acquiring discounts, such as bringing canned food items (certain days!) and half-off on the last day. Children FIVE and under are free. See your options at https://www.iowastatefair.org/visit/deals-discounts/ !
Did you know that you can park at one of three locations and ride the DART to the fair? This saves SUCH a headache from finding a nearby downtown parking spot. When you show your advanced fair ticket, you receive ½ off your roundtrip dart ride! (Children 5 and under are free.) FULL price for round trip, children 6-10 years and seniors 65+ are $1.00, and 12 years+ are $2.00. CASH ONLY!!!! DART locations available: Center Street Park & Ride at 7th and Center St downtown. Southeast Polk Schools at NE 80th and HWY 163. And The State Capitol on East 12th St. Parking at each location is free. These buses will run from 8:30 a.m. to midnight.
