Many moms imagine nursing their children will be like the beautiful images we see in magazines and movies. Well-kept and made-up women smiling as they nurse their rosy-cheeked cherub.
And for many, it’s not like this. At all.
One of the worst-kept secrets of pregnancy is that breastfeeding can be a struggle and the most challenging aspect of raising a baby. With support, encouragement, and resources, though, it doesn’t have to be.
There’s a new group in town called Community Partnerships for Healthy Mothers and Children. From their Community Partnerships for Healthy Mothers and Children Facebook page they describe their mission, “for Tama and Marshall Counties of Iowa is to collaborate with our community to create a healthier life for families through education and outreach[…] and to support all of our families by giving them the resources to get the support or education they need.”
They have recently launched an initiative called “Breastfeeding Friendly Environment”. Their recent newsletter posted on their Facebook page states that their initiative “aims to create and more welcoming and supportive environment for families who choose to breastfeed their babies.”
There are several businesses in town who are now “breastfeeding friendly” including Perkins, The Brew House, Taco Bell, and Pizza Ranch. I suspect we’ll hear more about this soon as other businesses join the initiative but for now, I appreciate knowing there are places in town that support nursing mothers.
